Congrats, you are officially a fur-baby parent! The excitement of finally getting your dream dog and bringing them home is incredible, to say the least. While it is fun and new, it can also be a bit overwhelming when you realize how much your daily routine changes with that cute ball of fur. Don’t worry, we’ve got you here at Sit Means Sit Dog Training. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure you and your new best friend are smooth sailing and have a great start to this new chapter of your life.
Stock Up on the Necessities
Dogs need the basic essentials such as food, water, toys, and the appropriate accessories for your set-up that you’re going to create for them. The breed of your dog will determine how big of a bed and crate they will need as well as what kind of food to give them. If you’re unsure about what kind of food to buy (we know there’s A LOT of options out there), chat with your vet. The main rule of thumb is to make sure they are well fed, always have access to water, and fit comfortably in their bed and crate at all times.
Visit Your Vet
You are responsible for making sure your dog is healthy and happy. With that being said, it is crucial that you get your dog to the vet as soon as possible to take care of vaccinations and schedule for them to be fixed. At this appointment, you can also talk to your vet about what kind of food to feed your furry pal and any other important information pertaining to the well being of your pup.
Time to Bond
You’re well aware at this point that adding a dog to your life is a huge commitment that involves a lot of patience and time. Just like you, your new pet is excited and anxious to get to know you. Make sure you set ample time aside to spend with them whether that’s getting some outdoor time to burn off energy, house training them to avoid stepping in those wet surprises, or, let’s not forget, snuggle time. Show your new companion that they can depend on you and trust you to take care of them right out of the gate — it’ll help you immensely in the long run!
